Helnium is the work of Hélène Lambert, a Swiss chemist, scientific designer, artist and pianist based in Geneva. Through her studies and research in chemistry at the University of Geneva, Hélène developed a fascination for the patterns, symmetries and forms that emerge naturally from matter. Working particularly with coordination chemistry, crystallography and self-organization, she began using the laboratory not only to study molecules, but also to reveal their visual language. She founded Helnium and pioneered an approach she calls Scientific Design: using real scientific processes, from synthesis and crystallization to microscopy and scientific imaging, to generate patterns, colors and structures directly from matter itself. These structures can then become artworks, textiles, objects and visual identities, allowing science to become the starting point of design rather than simply its inspiration. At the heart of Helnium is a broader question: why do the same geometries, symmetries and patterns appear across such different scales of nature, and why are we so naturally drawn to them? Through collaborations with scientists across chemistry, microscopy, physics and neuroscience, Helnium explores the relationship between matter, self-organization, perception and aesthetics.

The ambition is to build a new language of design, the one written by nature itself.
